Is it just me or is everyone else changing their beauty routines and almost obsessively buying new brands and trying new products? I have been trying so many new products in the past few months that my bathroom cabinets are overflowing. What happened to the days when we all used Suave shampoo and Covergirl cosmetics? Is it just the age I'm at? With skin and hair that's a lot less forgiving of boozy late nights and not enough vegetables. Or, am I reading too many beauty blogs and watching too many Youtube hauls?
Even though it's a little scary and embarrassing that I've almost reached Sephora's VIB Rouge status in the first few months of this year I don't think it's a bad thing. The beauty market has blown up over the past few years and I think it's cause we've all realized we need a little change. Beauty is a very personal thing that's unique to each individual. My skin is not the same as everyone else's , we all have different needs and concerns. Not to mention budget and lifestyle differences. If you've been stuck in a rut, whether it's with your hair care or skin care routine, now is the best time to get out there and try out a thousand new things.
Right now I'm on the hunt for the perfect skin care regime. I need new everything! Serum, cleanser, toner, night cream, day moisturizer with a good spf and masks. I'll let you know in later posts what I've found that works and what doesn't.
Today I want to share a hair care love and a hair care not in love.
Not in Love
My husband and I were out shopping on one of those trips where he's on a mission and we have to go to every store within a hundred mile radius to find the best possible deal on the exact perfect item he's looking for. It was awful. It starts out ok, then he starts getting frustrated at not finding what he wants or because what he wants is too expensive and really I'm just trying to keep my mouth shut to avoid triggering a melt down but I really needed shampoo. Really. So as were racing through Target towards the outdoor section I reach my arm into the shampoo aisle and snatch up the first thing my eyes land on. Yes, it avoided the annoying "we're not here to shop for shampoo!" argument but it was a bad idea. I ended up with $10 worth of shampoo and conditioner I'll never use.
The Not Your Mother's Way to Grow Long and Strong Shampoo says it will give you longer hair, faster as well as strengthen hair. It has a nice smell, it's sulfate free so it's ok for treated hair... but honestly I couldn't handle it. It made my hair feel like straw.I do have color treated hair which I'm very careful to condition and protect from heat so that it does not feel or look damaged and this shampoo really just provided a base that was so dry and crunchy I couldn't do anything with it. I used it for about 9 days, and I'm a have to shampoo every day kinda girl, so I can't claim it had any effect on the growth/length of my hair. If you're looking for a shampoo to help your hair grow faster and you have the type of hair you don't need to wash everyday then you might give it a try. I just couldn't.
I have used other products by the Not Your Mother's brand with fairly good results. Currently I have their She's a Tease volumizing hairspray and the Beach Babe texturizing sea salt spray. The hairspray gives good hold without getting crunchy and has a great scent that I love and the sea salt spray is ok, again with a great scent that's really beachy and pleasing but I don't find that it gives my fine hair much texture. Still, I do use the sea salt spray on days when I realize it's like 5pm and I haven't even brushed my hair. It helps give it a little something that says hey maybe my hair's like this on purpose.
Overall I'm totally open to trying more products from this brand. The packaging is fun and the smell is great. I just don't feel like I've found the product that they do best yet.
Love
Almost every beauty blogger and youtuber I follow has been talking about this product so I had to try it.
Living Proof 5 in 1 Perfect Hair Day Styling Treatment
A small 2oz. bottle is $15 from Sephora which is not bad. Not bad at all. This product feels like a creamy leave in conditioner and really does seem to achieve all 5 styling goals. It makes my hair feel soft and smooths out all the fly aways while also giving really good volume and body.It makes my hair look so good, I really don't want to overdo the praise but ugh! I can't even tell you. I used to wish so hard that I could be one of those people who have the time and money to have my hairstylist blow out my hair everyday. You know that look, perfect healthy lush hair. After using this I find myself maybe letting go of that wish. This stuff is awesome and really who has that kind of time?
If I use it and then do nothing with my hair, like not even blow dry it, I really don't get any effect. But all I have to do is put it in my damp hair then blow dry and it makes my hair look and feel amazing. Like a pro did it. And I have to say it really lasts me all day. It's a definite must have whether you flat iron, curl or just blow dry. I'm excited to try more of the Living Proof brand's products.
Please comment below if you have any great products to share with me, especially skin care. As I said I'm in the market for all new stuff. Let me know what you love and what you're not in love with.
